Using an Overseas Scan Request in China: What to Confirm

Match the clinician’s request to the exact examination, provider requirements and records you need afterward.

By AccessChinaMed coordination team · Updated . Practical coordination guidance; medical assessment remains with the treating healthcare provider.

Quick answer: Ask the receiving hospital to confirm the exact examination requested by your clinician and whether it accepts the overseas order. The body region, side, protocol, preparation and reporting arrangements should be clear before the slot and price are treated as confirmed.

Identify the examination, not just the machine

“MRI appointment” is an incomplete request. Give the provider the clinician’s order through the agreed private channel and ask it to verify the named examination, region and side where relevant. Include the question the scan is intended to address when the ordering clinician has provided it.

A package item, a machine specification and a standalone diagnostic protocol are different kinds of information. A listed single-region package add-on does not establish that a specialist examination with different requirements is included. If the provider cannot perform the requested study, ask the clinician about the next step before accepting a substitute.

Check local prerequisites before arranging the day

Some appointments may require local registration, a consultation, an accepted order or clinical screening. Ask the actual department what applies to your booking. The coordinator can obtain the requirements and arrange confirmed steps, but a reserved slot is not clinical approval.

  1. Have the receiving provider confirm the examination and order requirements.
  2. Confirm any appointment or document needed before the examination.
  3. Obtain the provider’s preparation and safety instructions.
  4. Agree the price, reporting and image-file scope.
  5. Arrange who will review the findings and when.

Raise safety information with the clinical team

RadiologyInfo’s MRI safety guidance explains why implants and devices need assessment by the MRI team. Provide the information it requests before the visit. Previous scanning elsewhere does not replace its checks.

For contrast examinations, RadiologyInfo advises discussing relevant conditions and previous reactions with the clinical team. The provider determines the protocol and preparation. Do not change medicines or fasting arrangements based on a generic booking message; obtain individual instructions from the treating team.

If anxiety, claustrophobia or a practical access need may affect the visit, raise it early. Any additional clinical support, including sedation, requires its own provider assessment and arrangements; it is not an automatic feature of accompaniment.

Plan beyond the scan slot

The examination, radiology report, translation and clinical review may occur at different times. Confirm each milestone, particularly if your departure is close. Before leaving, ask how you will access records and whom to contact if an item is missing. The person delivering documents is not necessarily the clinician responsible for explaining them.

Common questions

Does an overseas order guarantee a scan booking?

No. The receiving hospital decides whether it accepts the order and whether a local consultation or further assessment is required.

Can the coordinator choose contrast or a substitute examination?

No. Those decisions belong to the clinical team. Coordination can confirm the chosen examination, available appointment and agreed cost.
