How to Get an MRI in China as a Foreigner
Turn an MRI request into a confirmed appointment, with the right examination and a usable record to take home.
Quick answer: An MRI request needs a precise examination and a provider-approved clinical route. The scan appointment, radiologist’s report, translation and image-file handover are separate arrangements.
MRI appointment confirmation: what to confirm
| Decision | Confirmation to request |
|---|---|
| Order | Whether the hospital accepts the supplied request or requires its own consultation. |
| Examination | Region, side, protocol and whether contrast is prescribed. |
| Schedule | Registration, safety screening and scanning time. |
| Records | Report, translation and DICOM delivery dates and access method. |

Foreign visitors can request an MRI appointment in China, subject to the hospital accepting their registration and clinical request. Start with the exact examination your clinician wants. Confirm whether the hospital accepts an overseas order, requires a local consultation, and can provide the reports and images needed afterwards.
This guide focuses on planned MRI appointments. For the wider choices of provider and appointment route, see medical treatment in China for foreigners. For a visit specifically to Shanghai, use our Shanghai MRI booking guide.
Start with a clinical request, not a scanner advertisement
An enquiry saying “I need an MRI” leaves important details unresolved. Copy the examination name from the clinician’s request, including the body region and side where specified. Ask the booking team to have the provider check the original order if the wording is unclear. A coordinator should not translate an uncertain request into a different examination or select a scan protocol.
If you do not have an order, explain that when enquiring and ask about the hospital’s consultation route. Payment or an available scanner does not establish that a scan is appropriate.
Whole-body screening is a different question from a clinician-requested examination. The American College of Radiology’s statement does not support routine total-body MRI screening for people without relevant symptoms, risk factors or family history. This guide does not recommend whole-body MRI as a general travel check-up.
What should the booking confirmation say?
| Detail | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Examination | Body region, side where relevant, and the clinician-requested scope |
| Clinical order | Whether the existing order is accepted or a local consultation is needed |
| Location | Hospital, campus, imaging department and arrival time |
| Registration | Passport details and documents required by that hospital |
| Language | Who will help with registration, screening questions and communication |
| Handover | Written report, image files, expected availability and collection route |
For example, Jiahui’s official Medical Imaging Center page lists MRI services in Shanghai. That establishes an advertised service, not a confirmed appointment or a quoted AccessChinaMed package. Ask the chosen provider to accept the specific examination before making the rest of your itinerary depend on it.
Complete the hospital’s safety screening before arrival
MRI uses a strong magnetic field. Tell the imaging team about implanted devices or metal, relevant surgery and any difficulty tolerating an enclosed scanner. The provider decides what further information or arrangements are needed. Food, drink and medication instructions should come from that provider for the examination booked.
RadiologyInfo’s MRI information, produced by radiology professional organisations, explains these general considerations. It does not replace the chosen hospital’s instructions. Confirm how screening questions will be handled in a language you understand; accompaniment does not replace the imaging team’s safety assessment.
How should you compare MRI prices?
Compare quotes for the same examination. Check the region or regions, any consultation, contrast if clinically required, other hospital services, report, image export and translation. If the hospital changes the proposed scope, request an updated quote before agreeing.
Request the exact appointment scope and an itemised quote. Diagnostic planning starts from US$199; this does not guarantee a three-test bundle. Named hospital screening packages have separate catalogue prices. See our service comparison and quotation checklists.
In our Shanghai MRI coordination story, the visit involved a check-up plus lumbar-spine and bilateral-knee MRI. The team recorded US$750 for medical services and US$150 for accompaniment: US$900 historically, with payment of that total unverified. Those figures describe a different scope. All current AccessChinaMed projects include complimentary English appointment accompaniment through 31 December 2026.
Can booking, scanning and results happen on the same day?
Ask about three separate milestones: acceptance of the clinical request, the available scan appointment and completion of the report. A same-day consultation does not reserve a same-day scanner slot, and a completed scan does not mean the final report is ready.
Tell the team your departure date before confirming. If a local consultation is required, ask whether the imaging slot can be confirmed beforehand or only after assessment. Leave room for unresolved steps in your short-visit appointment plan and agree how outstanding records will reach you.
Leave with a report plan and an image plan
An English report may be hospital-issued or a translation of the original Chinese report. Ask which you will receive, who prepares it and whether it is included. See the guide to English medical reports in China.
Your next clinician may also need the examination images. Request the available original-image export or approved sharing route, check access expiry and ask the receiving team what format they accept. Our DICOM image handover guide covers that process. Finally, confirm who will explain the findings and whether a review appointment is separately charged.
To discuss diagnostic appointment coordination, begin with the examination name, whether you have an order and your preferred dates. Necessary clinical documents can then be shared through an agreed channel.

Questions about this topic
What details are needed to request MRI?
The exact examination, body region, relevant clinical order, preferred dates and required reports or image files.
Can an overseas scan order be used directly?
Ask the selected hospital; a local consultation or order may still be required.
Is contrast automatically included in a scan price?
Only if expressly quoted; the provider determines whether it is required.
Does scanning on one day guarantee a report that day?
No. Confirm scanning, report release, translation and clinical review as separate milestones.
