Do Chinese Hospitals Provide English Medical Reports?
Confirm the document you need, who will issue it and whether your doctor or insurer can use it.
Quick answer: Ask whether you will receive an English report issued by the provider, a translation of the original Chinese report, or both. Describe the documents your receiving clinician needs.
English medical report handover: what to confirm
| Decision | Confirmation to request |
|---|---|
| Original | Issuing hospital and complete Chinese document. |
| Translation | Full report or selected documents, translator and delivery route. |
| Other records | Whether imaging files and consultation notes are separate. |
| Handover | Expected date and recipient confirmation. |

Quick answer: Some medical services in China can provide English reports, but availability must be checked for the particular hospital, department and examination. An English-speaking consultation does not by itself confirm that every resulting document will be issued in English. Request the document by name and clarify whether it is a hospital original or a translation.
This guide focuses on the language and status of medical documents. For the wider booking process, start with medical treatment in China for foreigners.
Start with who needs to read the report
A doctor continuing your care, an insurer reviewing a claim and an employer checking a health certificate may ask for different documents. Before choosing a package, ask the intended recipient what they actually require. A readable English summary may help with an initial discussion, while a formal review may require the complete original, laboratory values or a particular signed form.
Make a short list of the documents, required language and submission deadline. Send that list with your appointment enquiry. This is more useful than asking whether a hospital is “international,” because it gives the department a concrete request to confirm.
Three documents that should be described differently
| Document | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Hospital-issued English or bilingual report | The hospital issues the document in English, or in both languages. Confirm which tests and sections it covers. |
| Translation of a Chinese hospital report | Identify the original hospital document and the separate translator. Retain both versions together. |
| Coordination or visit summary | A practical account of appointments and next steps. It does not replace the clinician’s findings or report. |
Do not relabel a translation as an original English hospital report. If a recipient asks for a certified translation, ask that recipient what certification it accepts before commissioning the work. “English available” is too broad to settle this question.
Specify each report instead of asking for one general report
For a health check-up, ask about both the overall assessment and the individual results. For imaging, ask whether the radiology report is available in English. For a consultation, check whether the clinic can issue an English clinical note, prescription explanation or medical certificate, depending on your purpose.
- Laboratory results: Will the supplied copy include test names, numerical results, units and reference ranges?
- Imaging report: Which examination and body region will the report describe?
- Consultation record: Can the relevant clinical findings and recommendations be provided in the requested format?
- Certificate or insurance form: Can the hospital complete that particular form, and is there a separate request or fee?
A written MRI or CT report is different from the image files. If another doctor needs to inspect the scan, see how to request DICOM images as a separate part of your booking.
What official hospital information can tell you
Beijing’s government has documented bilingual records and English examination materials in a Sanlitun community healthcare pilot. This is a specific example, published in 2022; it does not establish that every Beijing hospital or every current service provides the same documents.
Document release is also a separate administrative process. Beijing United Family’s patient services page describes a signed request for copies and a processing period of up to ten working days. That is the hospital’s published copy-request process, not a universal report turnaround or an English translation promise.
Ask these questions before confirming the appointment
- What is the exact name of the document that will be issued?
- Will the hospital issue it in English, or will English be supplied as a separate translation?
- Does the quoted price include that document and any translation?
- When should it be ready, and who will tell me if completion is delayed?
- Do I need to sign a release request before leaving?
- Can the receiving doctor or insurer use the proposed format?
If the English copy will follow later, ask whether the original can be supplied first. Agree on a contact route that you can still use after returning home. Our report and follow-up guide covers the handover arrangements.
Check the copy without changing the clinical meaning
When the documents arrive, check the patient name, examination date, body region and number of pages. Make sure attachments mentioned in the summary are present. If a translation appears to omit a result, unit or recommendation, ask for clarification against the original; do not correct medical wording from guesswork.
Keep both language versions in the same folder with clear filenames. Send them through the receiving clinic’s accepted channel and confirm receipt. An English document is useful only if the right person receives the complete, readable version.
In our Shenzhen check-up case, on-site support and later report follow-up were separate tasks: Lucy assisted at the visit, and Steven followed up on the English report after the patient returned home. The case illustrates why responsibility for document handover should be agreed before departure.
