How to Arrange a CT Scan in China as a Foreigner

Confirm the clinical request, preparation and full appointment sequence before planning a CT visit.

Quick answer: Request the exact CT examination and have the provider confirm its clinical route and protocol. A scan price cannot establish whether contrast, consultation or document support is included.

Arrange a CT scan in China through a hospital that accepts your registration and the clinician’s examination request. The request should identify the body area and clinical purpose; the healthcare team determines the protocol and whether contrast is needed. Confirm these details before comparing prices or reserving a short appointment window.

Our guide to medical treatment in China for foreigners explains the broader hospital choices. If you are planning a Shanghai appointment, continue with the local CT booking guide for that location.

Why “a CT scan” is not a complete booking request

A request for chest CT, a contrast examination or a CT angiogram does not describe the same appointment. Preserve the wording of the clinician’s request and ask the receiving hospital to clarify anything uncertain. Do not substitute a cheaper examination with a similar name.

CT uses X-rays. The clinician and imaging team should explain the reason for the examination and the relevant benefits and risks. RadiologyInfo’s body CT overview describes the method and the radiologist’s role in reporting. A coordinator can organise the route, but does not decide whether you should have CT.

If your starting point is a symptom rather than an existing order, ask about a consultation first. For an order issued abroad, confirm whether the hospital can accept it or needs a local clinician to review the request. There is no assumed national rule that a foreign order guarantees direct access.

Have the provider confirm the protocol before the quote

Ask the imaging department to resolve these points rather than trying to choose technical options yourself:

  • Which body area and clinical question does the request cover?
  • Is the examination without contrast, with contrast, or another specified protocol?
  • Does any required assessment or preparation need a separate visit?
  • Are previous reports or images needed for comparison?
  • What is the exact campus, department and arrival time?

Beijing United Family Hospital’s official radiology page lists CT services with and without contrast. This is a provider example, not a statement that every request can be accommodated there or that AccessChinaMed has confirmed a booking relationship. Match the appointment to the provider’s actual acceptance and written quote.

Contrast questions can affect the appointment sequence

Tell the provider about previous contrast reactions, relevant medical conditions and medicines, and any possibility of pregnancy. If contrast is planned, ask whether the hospital needs recent kidney-function information or another assessment before it can confirm the examination. Follow the hospital’s own instructions for eating, drinking and medicines.

The general CT preparation guidance from RadiologyInfo explains why these questions are raised. It is background information, not a universal preparation schedule for Chinese hospitals. Ask the treating team to explain instructions you do not understand; do not change medication or improvise fasting based on an internet checklist.

For a short trip, find out when the necessary assessment can be completed. A scan slot offered for Tuesday is not a complete Tuesday itinerary if an earlier consultation or provider-required test is still unresolved.

How much does a CT appointment cost?

A useful quote separates the examination from the other work needed to deliver it. Confirm the consultation or registration charge, exact CT scope, contrast and associated services if required, written report, image access and any translation. Ask whether each is included in the quoted total or priced separately.

Request the exact appointment scope and an itemised quote. Diagnostic planning starts from US$199; this does not guarantee a three-test bundle. Named hospital screening packages have separate catalogue prices. See our service comparison and quotation checklists.

All AccessChinaMed projects include complimentary English appointment accompaniment through 31 December 2026. Check the treating team’s language and the written report language separately. If additional services are proposed, have the scope and price explained before you agree.

A quick scan does not mean a quick completed visit

Plan the whole sequence: registration, any required consultation or checks, preparation, the examination, release of the final report and a review of the findings. Ask which steps are confirmed and which remain conditional. The time spent in the scanner is only one part of that sequence.

Same-day scanning or reporting may be possible for a particular booking, but must be confirmed by that provider. Do not plan a flight around a general promise of fast CT. Our short-visit planning guide helps organise appointments and outstanding reports around a departure date.

Confirm the report, the images and the next conversation

The written radiology report and the examination images are separate records. For an English report, ask whether it is issued by the hospital or translated afterwards, and whether its timing and price differ from the original report. Keep the original alongside any translation; see English medical reports in China.

For further care elsewhere, ask your next clinician whether they need the complete DICOM image study. Confirm the export or sharing method and any access expiry before departure. The DICOM handover guide explains how to check that the receiving team can use it.

Finally, identify the clinician who will discuss the findings with you. Ask whether this requires another appointment and fee. Receiving a report by email completes a delivery step; clinical advice requires the appropriate healthcare professional.

When requesting diagnostic coordination, start with the examination name, city, preferred dates and whether you already have an order. Agree a suitable channel before sending the documents needed for the provider’s review.

Questions about this topic

Can an overseas scan order be used directly?

Ask the selected hospital; a local consultation or order may still be required.

Does a US$199 starting reference include MRI, CT and ultrasound?

No. It does not guarantee an all-inclusive three-test bundle; the written quote identifies the actual examination.

Is contrast automatically included in a scan price?

Only if expressly quoted; the provider determines whether it is required.

Does scanning on one day guarantee a report that day?

No. Confirm scanning, report release, translation and clinical review as separate milestones.
