Preparing a Specialist Consultation in China: A Question Checklist

Turn a specific concern into a clear appointment request, a focused discussion and an agreed next step.

By AccessChinaMed coordination team · Updated . Practical coordination guidance; medical assessment remains with the treating healthcare provider.

Quick answer: Begin a specialist appointment request with the question you want the clinician to address. Confirm the department, records required, language support and what happens after the visit. A routine health-check package does not automatically provide that consultation.

Write the question before choosing a package

You may want an existing result explained, an ongoing concern assessed or advice on a treatment proposal. State that purpose in ordinary language. If you do not know the specialty, ask the hospital which initial route it accepts instead of requesting several departments on speculation.

For the first enquiry, a general description, preferred city and dates are sufficient. Keep detailed records for the agreed private channel after the provider has clarified what it needs. AccessChinaMed can help communicate the request and organise confirmed appointments; the healthcare team makes clinical decisions.

Prepare a short appointment brief

The NIH MedlinePlus Magazine appointment guidance recommends preparing questions and relevant medical information. For a cross-border visit, organise that material so the clinician can identify the original records and the practical decision you face.

  • One main question, followed by other concerns in priority order.
  • A concise timeline and any previous assessment relevant to that question.
  • The original reports available, labelled by date and issuing provider.
  • The medicine and allergy information requested by the clinical team.
  • Your language, access or private-discussion requirements.

The brief is a navigation aid for the consultation. It should not replace complete reports, create a new diagnosis or rewrite the clinician’s original findings.

Use the consultation to clarify the next decision

Ask what the clinician thinks is established, what remains uncertain and what the proposed next step is intended to answer. The MedlinePlus communication guidance recommends preparing questions and asking for clarification. Ask about diagnosis, options and treatment timing. The clinician should answer these for your circumstances; the coordinator can help with communication and arranging the agreed next step.

If another test is proposed, ask whether it requires a separate appointment and whether a return consultation should wait for the result. Record the provider’s instructions rather than fitting a clinical plan into an itinerary that cannot accommodate it.

Leave with a practical handover

Before leaving, confirm which documents you will receive, the expected release dates and the correct contact for an overdue item. Keep any recommended clinical follow-up separate from translation and report collection. If your condition changes or requires urgent attention, seek appropriate medical care rather than waiting for a planned appointment or enquiry reply.

Continue with specialist appointment coordination, the existing-records checklist and consultation–test–review sequencing.

Common questions

Does this checklist choose a specialty for me?

No. Ask the receiving healthcare team which clinical route is appropriate. The checklist organises your request and the questions you want addressed.

Is a consultation a commitment to treatment?

Ask for a consultation-only scope if that is what you want. Additional tests and treatment need their own clinical discussion and confirmed arrangements.
