Dental Care in China for Foreigners: Appointments, Costs and Follow-up

From the first dental appointment to records and follow-up after you leave China.

Quick answer: Use the assessment to establish what work is needed before accepting a staged treatment plan. Starting-price references do not establish an implant, crown or orthodontic treatment total.

Arrange the dental assessment first, then agree any treatment, its cost and the follow-up plan with the dentist. A booking for a consultation, X-ray and cleaning is not advance approval for an extraction, filling, crown or implant. Tell the booking team what you need and how long you will remain in China so the appointment can be matched to that purpose.

For the wider hospital-access process, see medical treatment in China for foreigners. This guide concentrates on the decisions that can otherwise become unclear between a dental enquiry, the chairside consultation and the final bill.

Describe the problem before choosing a treatment name

Explain whether you want a routine check and cleaning, an opinion about a particular tooth, help with discomfort, or a review of an existing restoration. Include any previous treatment relevant to the visit and bring available X-rays. Let the dentist decide what examination and imaging are appropriate rather than booking an assumed procedure solely from an online description.

If another dentist has already proposed treatment, ask for their written findings and the tooth number or location. That gives the receiving clinic a more useful starting point than a cropped image or a message saying only “I need a crown.” Tell the clinic about allergies, medicines and relevant health conditions through its agreed intake process.

Understand the dental starting reference

AccessChinaMed dental planning starts from US$550. The agreed quotation identifies the assessment, X-ray and cleaning or treatment scope. Crowns, implants and orthodontics need a dentist-led plan and a separate staged treatment quote. Compare dental quotation components.

Verify the clinic entrance and the language arrangements

A large hospital can have several buildings and reception points. Obtain the dental department’s building, floor and registration instructions, not merely the hospital’s name. Ask whether your appointment is with a general dental service or a department selected for your stated concern.

For example, Clifford Hospital’s official site gives its address as 1 and 3 Hongfu Road, Panyu, Guangzhou, and provides an international department and foreign-patient appointment route. This confirms a way to enquire; it does not confirm a particular dental slot, its price or the language of the dentist on duty.

Ask separately about English during registration, discussion of options and aftercare. Our guide to English-speaking doctors and hospital support helps distinguish a clinician’s language ability from accompaniment or interpretation.

A real bill illustrates why estimates need context

In the documented Guangzhou dental visit, coordination included finding the correct building and entrance. An initial consultation estimate of CNY300 was separate from a later receipt totalling CNY324: CNY12 for examination, CNY39 for consultation and CNY273 recorded as treatment.

That receipt establishes charges for that encounter. It does not establish a tooth-extraction tariff, the price of the Shanghai US$550 package or the total cost of a dental trip. The useful lesson is to compare the service descriptions on the estimate and receipt, not just their totals.

Agree the next decision before additional work begins

After the examination, ask the dentist to explain the options in terms you understand. If the recommendation differs from what you expected, take time to confirm its purpose and scope. A coordinator can help with communication, but cannot choose a clinical procedure for you.

  • Which tooth or area would be treated, and what is the proposed procedure?
  • What does this quote cover today, and what would be charged later?
  • Are any alternatives or a further assessment appropriate?
  • Will another visit be needed, and what must happen before it?
  • What written aftercare and contact route will you receive?

Ask who will seek your approval if extra work is proposed. The hospital payment guide explains how to separate an estimate, an authorised charge and a receipt.

Plan around return visits and the dentist’s advice

Do not fit treatment into a travel itinerary on the assumption that everything can be finished in one sitting. Ask the dentist how the proposed care fits your available dates, whether an interim stage is involved, and when a review is required. If you will leave before that review, discuss a suitable handover before agreeing to proceed.

Keep a record of the procedure, treated tooth, materials where relevant, prescribed medicines and aftercare instructions. If another dentist will continue your care, ask what records that clinician needs and which clinic will answer follow-up questions.

Request usable X-rays and records before leaving

Ask whether you can receive the original digital X-ray, the clinical note and an itemised receipt, through which channel and in which language. A request for an emailed image is not the same as confirmed delivery. Check that the file arrives and can be opened; keep the treating clinic’s contact details with it.

All AccessChinaMed projects include complimentary English-speaking appointment accompaniment through 31 December 2026. Confirm which visit and communication tasks are covered, including any return appointment. The goal is a clear handover from booking to dental assessment, agreed treatment and follow-up.
