Eye Examinations in China for Foreigners: What to Book and What to Ask

Know the difference between checking your glasses prescription and discussing an eye-health concern.

Quick answer: A routine eye assessment and a specialist retinal visit require different booking requests. Confirm the appointment purpose and each proposed examination rather than assuming a universal bundle.

Tell the clinic whether you need a glasses prescription check, a general eye examination or an assessment of a specific concern. Those requests can involve different appointments and tests. An international visitor can ask for an eye appointment in China, but the clinic should confirm the appropriate service, language support and scope before you commit to a package.

Use our medical treatment in China guide for the broader access process. Here, the main task is to make the reason for your eye visit clear and understand what you will leave with.

Choose the appointment by its purpose

“Eye check” can mean several things in a booking message. If your aim is a prescription for glasses, say so and ask whether a written prescription is provided. If you have an eye-health concern or a previous diagnosis, describe it and ask the clinic which clinician or department should review you.

Your reason for visitingWhat to clarify when booking
Checking vision or a glasses prescriptionWhether refraction and a written prescription are included, and whether the appointment also includes a doctor’s assessment.
A general eye-health reviewWhich examinations are included and whether the clinician may recommend further tests after reviewing your history.
A known condition or a specific concernWhether the proposed appointment is suitable, which previous records to bring and whether a different clinic is needed.
Considering an eye procedureAsk the provider about an appropriate assessment. A general examination package does not establish eligibility for surgery.

Do not wait for a routine travel booking if you develop sudden severe eye pain with symptoms such as redness, nausea or blurred vision. Seek urgent medical assessment. The National Eye Institute’s guidance describes this symptom pattern as requiring immediate attention; this article cannot determine its cause.

Agree the eye-appointment scope

Eye-care planning starts from US$100. This is not an automatically included six-test bundle or a guaranteed retinal-specialist tariff. Confirm the consultation and actual examination list, including any separately proposed OCT, dilated examination or visual-field test. Eye-care quotation checklist.

Confirm English for the actual appointment

Look for evidence about the individual clinician and the service you intend to book. As one example, Jiahui’s official ophthalmology page lists English among the languages of individual doctors. Its international-patient service also describes language support. Neither listing confirms a particular doctor’s availability for your date, and Jiahui is not identified here as the provider of the US$100 package.

Ask who will explain the tests and findings, whether support continues if you are sent to another room, and in which language written instructions will be issued. See English-speaking doctors and hospital support for questions that distinguish spoken assistance from English documentation.

Bring information that helps the clinician

Prepare a short account of your reason for attending and any previous eye care. Bring your current glasses, available prescriptions, relevant reports and a list of medicines or eye drops you use. If you wear contact lenses, ask the clinic whether you should remove them beforehand and follow its instructions for the specific examination.

Tell the clinic about your departure date and whether another eye-care professional will review the results. If you need documents for a particular purpose, send the recipient’s requirements before booking. Confirm the hospital, branch, floor and arrival time in writing, especially when a provider has several locations.

Leave flexibility for tests and transport

Ask whether dilation may be needed and how it could affect the rest of your day. The National Eye Institute explains that dilating drops can temporarily cause blurred vision and light sensitivity, and recommends arranging a ride home. Confirm transport with the clinic instead of assuming you can drive immediately afterwards.

A booking time is not a promised finish time. Avoid placing an immovable work meeting or departure immediately after the appointment; the examination may lead to additional questions or a recommendation for another visit. Our short-visit planning guide helps organise that flexibility.

Ask what the findings mean and what comes next

Before leaving, distinguish the prescription, examination findings and any follow-up recommendation. Ask the clinician which documents you should retain and whether further assessment is needed. If a test is still pending, record its release route and who will explain the result.

Request written instructions and clarify the format of any English summary. A coordinator can help organise document delivery and communication, but cannot interpret the examination as a medical diagnosis. All AccessChinaMed projects include complimentary English-speaking appointment accompaniment through 31 December 2026; confirm the scope for the appointment and any later visit in your written plan.
